OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men’s basketball received its whistleblower hour and television network for its SEC/Big 12 Challenge contest at Oklahoma State, with the Rebels and Cowboys playing on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. CT on Jan. 28, 2023.
Ole Miss now has television designations and whistleblower hours for most of its 2022-23 schedule. Going forward, the Rebels will play on national television at least 23 times during the season. Schedules and TV assignments for the remaining non-conference games will be announced at a later date.
The Rebels and Cowboys have met three times before – all at neutral venues – with their last meeting at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on November 29, 2019 as part of the NIT Tipoff Championship.
This is Ole Miss’s eighth total Challenge appearance since making her debut in 2012-13, with the Rebels recently earning their first win in the series with a 67-56 win over Kansas State at home. on January 29. game, freshman Daechun Ruffin led the way with a superb second-half effort, scoring 13 of 17 total points in the back half in addition to a career-high seven rebounds to help the Rebels win the rebound battle, 43-33. Ole Miss’s defense has been piling up, keeping K-State just 30.2 percent on total shots and 30.6 percent on three. For his three-game effort that week, Ruffin was named the first Ole Miss SEC Freshman of the Week since the 2011-12 season.
All 10 Big 12 teams and 10 of the SEC’s 14 member institutions will participate in this year’s event. Each of the 10 SEC teams that participated in the 2022 Challenge will be part of the 2023 event. The SEC won the ninth annual Big 12/SEC Challenge by winning six of 10 games on Jan. the SEC won the challenge. The SEC has lost the challenge only once in the past six years.
This will be the eighth year that a bye into the league schedule for participating teams has been created to accommodate the one-day format. The first two years of the Challenge took place over several days in November and December, but the last eight events were consolidated into a single day in January.
Ole Miss enters fifth year under head coach Kermit Davisand will feature two of the SEC’s most exciting guards – junior Matthew Murrel and second Daechun Ruffin. This summer, the Rebels shone in Nassau on their road trip, where Ole Miss went 3-0 thanks to superb play by the sophomore goaltender. Jacques Whitewho averaged 23.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and shot 64% overall in the Bahamas.
Ole Miss will also sport eight new additions for the 2022-23 campaign. Rebels added ESPN’s 12th High School Signing Class for 2022-23 with Top 100 Signers No. 81 malique ewin (Forward, 6-10, 220, Lawrenceville, Ga./Berkmar HS), No. 97 TJ Caldwell (Guard, 6-4, 190, Dallas, TX/Faith Family Academy (Oak Cliff)), #98 Amarée Abram (Guard, 6-4, 190, Port Arthur, TX/Southern California Academy) and another four-star high school signee Robert Vacher (Guard, 6-5, 195, Grayson, Georgia/Southern California Academy).
Additionally, Ole Miss added four transfers for the 2022-23 season: Jackson State graduate transfer Jayveous McKinnis (forward, 6-7, 225, Brandon, Mississippi); Transfer Loyola New Orleans Myles Burns (Forward, 6-6, 210, Houston, TX); Transfer to Louisiana Theo Akwuba (Forward, 6-11, 225, Montgomery, Alabama); and Buffalo transfer Josh Mballa (Forward, 6-7, 220, Bordeaux, France).
