Manvel Mavericks vs. Shadow Creek Sharks: Alvin ISD High School Football Programs Face Off for First Time to Start 2022 Season

ROSHARON, Texas (KTRK) — They are in the same school district and at the end of the Greater Houston area, and yet Shadow Creek and Manvel High Schools did not face each other on the football field.

Until Friday evening.

The two football programs advertised to have become successful recruiting venues were the featured teams in ABC13’s Game of the Week on the first Friday of the 2022 season.

How was the first game? Shadow Creek claims the first chapter in a potential storybook rivalry. The Sharks defeated the Manvel Mavericks, 32-13.

Shadow Creek, retired two seasons from a state championship, hopes to match the success of the 2019 season. The Sharks went 9-3 with a playoff victory in 2021.

The Manvel Mavericks didn’t fare too badly themselves. In 2021, they went 10-2 with two playoff wins.

So what stopped the two schools from going head-to-head even just 9 miles apart? It’s rankings.

Shadow Creek attends 6A, where the Houston Chronicle ranks it #9 among 6A schools. Manvel belongs to 5A, where it is among the top three 5A schools in the Chronicle.

Here are some other Week 1 games we’re keeping an eye on:
