Indiana Free Library offers weekly programs | News

The Indiana Free Library welcomes the public to its lineup of free programs for the week.

The weekly theme for the children’s department is: St. Patrick’s Day.

Monday

• 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Book Babies. This program introduces your baby, from birth to 24 months, to the sounds of language and music through simple stories, songs and nursery rhymes. Book Babies will take place in the Children’s Department Story Room.

• 7 to 8 p.m., IFL Book Club, “Elizabeth and Hazel”, by David Margolick.

When Elizabeth Eckford braved the gauntlet of white rowdies leading to the newly desegregated Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957, photographers captured her image and that of the angry young white woman behind her. Elizabeth, the stoic, and Hazel Bryan, the executioner, were frozen like icons. Elizabeth was one of the Little Rock Nine, black teenagers who became the targets of racial hatred as well as national and international inspirations.

Margolick draws on interviews and news articles from the time to present a highly nuanced analysis of how Elizabeth and Hazel were affected by the scene that made them famous.

Books are available at the library.

The IFL Book Club meets on the second floor of the library in the Community Hall.

• 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., La Maison des Métiers. Join us twice a week in the Kids’ Department Craft Zone for easy and fun arts and crafts projects for kids ages 6-12.

Explore the many types of arts and crafts as we work on our own projects!

Most materials can be found at home or inexpensively at the dollar store. As always, the program is free and open to the public.
