Fun and Active Programs – Shawnee News-Star

Amy Riggins

Did you know that the Shawnee Recreation Center at 401 N. Bell offers fun and active programs for seniors 55 and older? We’re open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free coffee and iced tea all day. What a story! We also offer free memberships to the Senior Rec Center, with a cost of only $2 for your membership card.

Some people might not consider themselves “seniors”. It is very good! If you fall into the 55+ age category, we might have something you enjoy, and if you join us, you might be able to advocate for a name change for the center! We have lots of free classes and programs, so check out our monthly activity calendar for all the details.

Here in the center our games room has two pool tables, a pool table and game tables for dominoes, cards, puzzles etc. We have plenty of plush seating, as well as a TV, so everyone can come and hang out with friends, chat, play games, and share bragging rights!

Our Gospel Singing group has a new appointment! They still meet to sing on Tuesday and Friday mornings, and they now meet from 11 a.m. to noon. Come join them for favorite Gospel tunes, coffee and fellowship!

The next Board of Governors meeting will be Tuesday, April 12 at 9:30 a.m. Our Advisory Board meets once a month and helps advise city staff on ideas for the center and recreation department. Current members include John Belzer, Ann Dowdy, Shirley Gregory, Bill Haley, Albert Rice, Phyllis Croswell, Sally Murphy, Jeanni Pruitt, Janice Orlasuski and our City Commissioner Representative Ben Salter. If you have a suggestion for them, call us at 405-878-1528 or contact a board member directly.

This same Tuesday, we will celebrate April birthdays! You will find free decorations and snacks throughout the day. Our April birthday poster will be on display, and anyone who has an April birthday is welcome to add their name to others.

Most weeks we offer a Wednesday wellness program on some aspect of a healthy lifestyle. This Wednesday, April 13, Ms. Tara Turner of Oklahoma Legal Aid will provide an information board and short presentation on “Scam Prevention”. Stop by to learn tips on how best to avoid falling for the many scams out there, some targeting the older demographic. Everyone is welcome!

Have you heard of our new craft club “Just Crafting Around”? This energetic group meets Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. Founding members can join this new club for just $25, and they have lots of fun arts and crafts planned. Last week, they created beautiful, colorful carnations from dyed coffee filters. Visit with Vonda for more details or call us at 405-878-1528.

To stay up to date with all the local senior happenings, you can tune in every Wednesday morning at 8:35 a.m. for the “Mike in the Morning Show,” found at KGFF on your radio dial at 100.9 FM or 1450 AM. This show is also streamed live at

You can also join our Shawnee Senior Programs and Events Facebook group page if you are active on Facebook.

Take care, stay healthy and we hope to see you soon at the Senior Rec Center.
