NEW YORK (AP) — CBS News said it is revamping its streaming service to better integrate television network programs and personalities.
The CBS service launches new evening news and prime-time programming on Monday, from a newly built studio in Manhattan, in what promises to be an aggressive year of product building. information.
The hour-long evening newscast, beginning at 7 p.m. EST, will feature a rotating cast of anchors and will hail from New York, Washington and Los Angeles. The streaming service will continue airing a rerun of Norah O’Donnell’s “CBS Evening News” later in the evening.
For two hours starting at 8 p.m., the service will choose from a number of programs that come out on television, different each evening. They include “Person-to-Person,” an interview series hosted by O’Donnell, and documentaries under the “CBS Reports” banner. There will also be shows based on uplifting news segments hosted by Tony Dokoupil, on-the-road reports by Steve Hartman, and “Eye on America” reports anchored by Michelle Miller.
“Here Comes the Sun” highlights reporting from “CBS Sunday Morning,” while the service will also air “60 Minutes” and “48 Hours” TV episodes.
The service, available through the CBS News app, on Paramount+, has operated since 2014, but primarily as a “wheel” of straight, sometimes repeated newscasts.
CBS is also emphasizing the integration of streaming products designed for its local news stations, with a 14th, from Miami, beginning operations Monday.
“The most important thing we’ve done is integrate network, digital and local,” said Neeraj Khemlani, president and co-director of CBS News and Stations. “It’s not about three separate products for three separate audiences.”
The gradual transformation of CNN, Fox News and MSNBC primarily into often opinionated political discussion networks gives the streaming service an open path, Khemlani said.
“We believe in balanced and unbiased reporting,” he said. “We believe in original reporting and exquisite storytelling. These are the values of CBS News.
Khemlani denied that the timing of CBS’ facelift had anything to do with its rivals. CNN, for example, launched a wave of hiring in preparation for the launch of the CNN+ streaming service in a few months.
